What is Youth Development?

Youth Development noun. A process that prepares young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through a coordinated, progressive series of activities and experiences that help them become socially, morally, emotionally, physically, and cognitively competent. Positive youth development addresses the broader developmental needs of youth, in contrast to deficit-based models, which focus solely on youth problems. (This definition was approved by the executives of National Collaboration for Youth Members, March 1998)

Youth Development Services at TST BOCES include classroom presentations pertaining to substance abuse prevention and wellness, facilitation of support/skill-building groups for children, one-to-one student support and a resource library with videos and books about drugs and social issues available for loan to school staff and parents.

Strategies:

Information Dissemination: To provide accurate, age appropriate alcohol, tobacco, and other drug information in a culturally sensitive manner

Education: To promote social competencies and life skills, such as decision-making, problem solving, communication and resistance skills, and stress management  techniques

Positive Alternatives: To support activities that focus on fun rather than alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use

Community & Professional Mobilization: To provide training in prevention techniques for parents, educators, professionals and community members

Early Intervention:  To identify youth at risk as early as possible, providing intervention services and linkages to appropriate community resources
