School Tobacco Policy Project

The School Tobacco Policy Project (STOPP) at TST BOCES is a grant funded project through the New York State Department of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control (BTUPC). The project is designed to work with school districts in three counties (Chenango, Cortland, and Tompkins) to assist them in examining existing tobacco control policy, strengthen future policy, and offer suggestions on policy implementation and enforcement that is both strong and pertinent to tobacco related offenses.

The program, as currently funded, will run through December 2009. Currently, over half of the districts in the three counties are engaged in one of the phases of the project. Upon approval of the policy, the project assists the districts and administration of grades 7-12 with implementation/ enforcement and communication of the policy to student, staff, families and the community. As the program continues, all districts will be encouraged to partner with the School Tobacco Policy Project within the three county area.

The project is currently funded at $95,000 annually. These funds will allow the project to work with schools to review and strengthen existing tobacco policy as well as establish partnerships with additional school districts.
