3/19/2010 - Aligning student learning with Collections of the Johnson Museum of Art

K-12 Teachers and Teacher Librarians will explore the unique relationship between words and images: from the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt, Islamic calligraphy, and medieval illuminations to contemporary artists who use language in challenging, creative new ways. We'll tour the galleries and special exhibitions, create mixed media art using words and images, and identify a variety of writing prompts supported by a survey of the collections. Attendees will gain an awareness and understanding of strategies for including the collections of the Johnson in classroom and library lessons, learn to use writing strategies related to the arts, see the connection between reading and visual literacy concepts aligned with art objects, and experience rich, hands-on experimentation with art-making ideas. Continental breakfast and lunch included in the day.
