Where Will Our Children Live...

A lonesome warrior stands in fear of what the future brings,
he will never hear the beating drums or the songs his brothers sing.

Our many nations once stood tall and ranged from shore to shore
but most are gone and few remain and the buffalo roam no more.

We shared our food and our land and gave with open hearts,
We wanted peace and love and hope, but all were torn apart.

All this was taken because we did not know what the white man had in store,
They killed our people and raped our lands and the buffalo roam no more.

But those of us who still remain hold our heads up high, and the spirits of
the elders flow through us as if they never died.

Our dreams will live on forever and our nations will be reborn, our bone and
beads and feathers all will be proudly worn.

If you listen close you will hear the drums and songs upon the winds, and in
the distance you will see....the buffalo roam again.

Parent Corner

Pearls and links to help you in one of the most difficult and wonderful times of parenting.

Helpful links, websites, and suggestions

Tip # 1 take your child's cell phone at night and turn it off.  So many kids are exhaused and brag about how late they are on their phones texting or talking.

Mrs. Spallone's dream--That all parents would monitor the time their kids are on computers (mostly im'g), cellphones, and game systems and DEMAND that their child spend an EQUAL amount of time engaged in reading, physical activity preferably outdoors, playing a board game or cards with family, or creating something.  All research shows that this would in fact increase your child's success in school and their overall well being.  I have done this myself and will tell you that IT WORKS!! Be willing to watch the clock, pull the plug, AND PROVIDE alternatives for your child!

COLLEGE AND CAREER

CORNER

It is never too early to start looking at colleges with your HS child! In fact, going to see schools on the way to family vacations or trips is a low pressure and fun way to encourage your child to look forward to the future and to see what they are working towards!

Your child gets into college based upon their Grade Point Average (GPA) and their entrance exam scores-SAT and ACT exams taken usually spring of Junior Year.

Cram classes exist for these exams--online classes, prep books via Amazon.com or bookstores, CD computer programs, Homer Center 4 the Arts($200), Manlius Pebble Hill ($450) in Dewitt, Ithaca's Kaplan ($800)Most kids MUST PREPARE to do well on these exams long in advance.

Global history and geography 9 is a course that explores the world from BCE times and early hominds through the 1700's Age of Enlightenment.  We will identify and analyze geography, religions and philosophies, economics, politics, art, and customs of the world's people.  A wide variety of assessments will be used from traditional testing, to structured debates, projects, and written essays.  An additional component of this course will focus on regents exam preparation with daily multiple choice regents questions and practice in dbq's.  When appropriate, current issues and news that pertains to areas of study will be added.
